About the Cherokee County Landfill

 

The Cherokee County Sanitary Landfill (I.D.N.R. Permit No. 18-SDP-1-75P) is operated by the Cherokee County Solid Waste Commission.

The Cherokee County Sanitary Landfill Hours are as follows:

Monday – Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Closed Saturdays from January 1 through March 31

Open 8:00 am to noon the first Saturday of the month from April 1 through December 31

Dump Fee:

Fee is $42.00 a ton

Minimum charge is $12.00 plus tax (500 pounds and under)

Contact the landfill for all other special pricing, (ACM, PCS, electronics, tires, commercial yard waste, etc.)

Waste accepted in the landfill includes:

  • Municipal solid waste
  • Construction and demolition waste

 

The following types of waste are not accepted in the landfill:landfillcompactor

  • Hazardous waste
  • Liquid waste
  • Septage
  • Appliances*
  • Radioactive and infectious waste
  • Hot loads
  • Tires**
  • Yard waste***
  • Lead acid batteries****
  • Waste oil****

 

Appliances, tires and yard waste cannot be put in the landfill per Iowa law.

*We accept appliances for recycling for a charge, they are not put in the landfill. Call us for the rate.

**We accept tires for a charge, they are not put into the landfill.

*** Yard waste is accepted free of charge, it is made into mulch and is available for County residents.

****Waste oil and lead acid batteries can be taken through the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center.

 

Due to flow control for garbage in the State of Iowa only residents of Cherokee and Ida Counties can bring garbage to the landfill. Other services like household hazardous waste and recycling are open to residents of other counties. See the individual sections of this website for more specific information.
